SMU opens four new supermarkets in the week leading up to National Holidays
Supermarket chain SMU, parent company of Unimarc, Alvi, Super 10, and Mayorista 10, inaugurated four new stores in just five days across the Valparaíso and Metropolitan regions. During the second week of September, right before Independence Day, it opened a new Unimarc-Alvi combo in Los Andes, a Unimarc in Macul, and a Super 10 in the El Peñón area of Puente Alto.
In doing so, the company continues advancing its organic growth plan, a key initiative within its 2023-2025 strategy, which includes the opening of 58 stores over three years, 23 of which are located in the Metropolitan and Valparaíso regions.
“We are very proud to have inaugurated these four new locations, bringing us to a total of 14 store openings so far this year. This growth initiative is a fundamental part of our 2023-2025 strategic plan, which includes the opening of 43 stores in Chile and 15 in Peru,” said Marcelo Gálvez, SMU’s General Manager.
New Unimarc-Alvi Combo
SMU began September with the opening of a combined Unimarc-Alvi store, referred to as a “combo,” which combines two different formats in one location in Los Andes. Specifically, it is located at Avenida Hermanos Clark 55, where Unimarc has an 855-square-meter sales floor offering a wide variety of products for local residents, while Alvi has 1,113 square meters to serve its commercial partners.
Francisco Gaete, Alvi’s Format Manager, highlighted, “We want to remain close to our business partners, so they see Alvi as their best business ally. Our operations, from the Coquimbo region to Los Lagos, continue to grow and bring us closer to all of our customers.”
Increased Presence in the Metropolitan Region
In addition to the dual opening in Los Andes, the supermarket chain also opened another Unimarc in the Macul district (Avenida Macul 3578), with a 1,213-square-meter sales floor. This marks the seventh Unimarc opening in 2024, and the 2023-2025 projections include the opening of 26 new stores.
“At this new location, our customers will find a product assortment tailored to their needs, with a focus on fresh goods and large promotions to help save money while providing the best service,” said Lionel Gubler, Unimarc’s Format Manager.
Lastly, Super 10 El Peñón in Puente Alto, located at Avenida México 1915, was also inaugurated, marking the format’s third new store of 2024.
SMU's soft discount format aims for efficiency, streamlining the shopping experience for customers with a quick and convenient experience, offering a wide range of optimized products and exclusive brands, such as Nuestra Cocina, Smart Clean, Amada Masa, and many others.
“Our value proposition continues to grow, and today Super 10 offers an excellent way for Puente Alto residents to save, with a second location in the district offering high-quality products at the best prices,” said Nicolás Delsol, Super 10’s Format Manager.
The new openings were attended by SMU directors and executives, as well as local and community authorities. All stores also emphasize energy efficiency, featuring LED lighting, climate control, modern equipment, and the latest refrigeration units, leading to significant energy savings and environmental care.
With these milestones, Unimarc now has 296 stores across Chile. Alvi operates 35 locations from Coquimbo to Los Lagos, while Super 10 has 10 stores in the Metropolitan, Valparaíso, and O’Higgins regions.
